Chawla excels in India Under-19 win

Captain Piyush Chawla and medium pacer Abu Nacheem shared eight wickets to bundle out hosts New Zealand for 147 and power India to a comprehensive innings and 50-run victory in the first four-day Under-19 'Test' at Lincoln on Wednesday.

Leg spinner Chawla followed up his century in the Indian first innings with a haul of 5 for 19 while Nacheem snared 3 for 55 in New Zealand's second innings.

For the home team there was nothing of note except a knock of 42 by M Taiaroa in the second innings.

New Zealand trailed the visitors by 197 runs on the first innings and were forced to follow-on.

The victory put the Indian colts 1-0 up in the three-match Youth Test series.

Earlier, India had amassed 499 for 8 declared in their first innings after being put in to bat with Ravi Teja, Virat Koli and Chawla slamming centuries to which New Zealand replied with 302.

Medium pacer Ishant Sharma took 5 for 55.

The second Youth Test is scheduled at Carisbrook, Dunedin, from January 27 and the final match is slated from February 2 to 5, at Lincoln.

The Indians are also scheduled to play a best-of-three limited-overs series against the hosts after the conclusion of the Test rubber.

Scores: India under 19 499 for 8 decl. (Ravi Teja 105, Ajinkya Rahane 49, Virat Koli 113, Piyush Chawla 119, Yo Mahes 61) beat New Zealand 302 (Ishant Sharma 5 for 55) and 147 (M Taiaroa 42; P Chawla 5 foer 19, Abu Nacheem 3 for 55).
