Buchanan suggests two-innings-a-side in ODIs

Former Australian coach John Buchanan has come up with a wacky idea to revamp "boring" ODI cricket, suggesting that one-dayers be played in quarters of 25 overs each to make them as exciting as Twenty20 games.

"The current one-day format needs to be revamped. It's just my personal view, but you would think it needs to become more closely aligned with Twenty20. It could be broken into quarters with bonus points on offer to make the first innings more meaningful," Buchanan, who also supported the idea of playing day-night Tests, told Sun-Herald.

"The current 50-over games are being played under a tired format," he added. Buchanan also had a suggestion for making twenty20 cricket more exciting. The Aussie felt involving all the 15 members of a side would add to the thrill.

"Most touring teams travel with 15 players so they could all be involved. It's currently a batting-dominated game. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a game biased towards one of the disciplines, but I don't think it should be dominated by the bat so often," he said.

"You would be able to substitute batters, bowlers and fielders - have your best bowling attack against the other side's best batting line-up. And it would reduce the workload of each player on a tour, and the risk of burnout with so much cricket being played," he added.
