Bishoo to replace Bravo in West Indies squad

March 01, 2011 14:18 IST

The ICC approved Guyana leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo as a replacement for injured all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the West Indies squad for the World Cup.

West Indies had nominated Bishoo as a replacement for Bravo, who had injured his left knee during their seven-wicket loss to South Africa, and ICC today confirmed World Cup's Event Technical Committee's approval of Bishoo as a replacement.

The confirmation was conveyed to the West Indies Cricket Board on behalf of the committee.

"As per rule, any injury-based replacement requires a written submission to the event technical committee along with a diagnosis from a medical practitioner as to the extent of the injury. The replacement player is a permanent addition to the squad," the ICC said in a statement.

The 25-year-old Bishoo, has not been capped by the West Indies. He has played 21 first-class matches and 13 domestic Twenty20 games. The Guyanese-born bowler also played for the West Indies A team last year.

Bravo is the 11th player to be replaced in the tournament after compatriots Adrian Barath and Carlton Baugh, Zimbabwe's Edward Rainsford, Tinotenda Mawoyo and Sean Ervine, Australia's Nathan Hauritz and Michael Hussey, Praveen Kumar of India, England's Eoin Morgan and Sohail Tanvir of Pakistan were earlier replaced.

As with all players in the tournament, the eligibility of a replacement player is subject to approval by the ICC before that player can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 consists of David Richardson (ICC, chairman), Prof. Ratnakar Shetty (Tournament Director), Campbell Jamieson (IDI representative), Anil Kumble (host nominee), David Lloyd (independent nomination) and Sanjay Manjrekar (independent nomination).
