South Africa on top

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

Although South Africa lost the final ODI to Australia, their 3-2 series win confirms that they are now indeed the world's best ODI side. The tired Australians could sink further as they fly out to face a cricket-hungry Pakistan team.

England might exult at their 3-2 away victory over West Indies, but it should really have been 3-2 in favour of West Indies if only their coach knew how to read the D/L tables. As if that wasn't bad enough, the D/L method asked England to score just 135 runs in 20 overs -- which now appears trivial in the Twenty20 era -- to win the fourth ODI.

Table A shows the current ODI Rediff ODI Rankings.

TABLE A: CURRENT ODI RANKINGS (as on April 18, 2009)
Team WI TI ODI RBI=
WI * 0.80 + TI * 0.20
diff: 14.3.09 -> 18.4.09 Ranking
South Africa 63.56 75.00 65.85 +0.07 1
Australia 65.74 50.00 62.59 -1.60 2
India 58.64 75.00 61.91 -1.05 3
New Zealand 55.13 70.00 58.10 +0.00 4
Pakistan 49.61 57.14 51.12 +0.02 5
Sri Lanka 44.89 66.67 49.25 +2.48 6
England 45.19 50.00 46.15 +3.24 7
West Indies 42.23 20.00 37.78 -0.71 8
Bangladesh 13.27 18.18 14.25 +0.29 9
Zimbabwe 14.00 0.00 11.20 -0.01 10

It might seem strange that India have dropped by a point, and Sri Lanka gained over two points, when neither team has played a game since the last update. This is because India's win, and Sri Lanka's defeat, in the CB tri-series in Australia last March has now gone out of the window of reckoning to calculate the tournament index.

The corresponding Reliance Mobile ICC ODI rankings (as on April 18, 2009) are South Africa (126), Australia (123), India (122), New Zealand (112), Pakistan (111), England (108), Sri Lanka (105), West Indies (92), Bangladesh (46) and Zimbabwe (23).

Details

The Rediff ODI rating, now published regularly over the last seven years, is a judicious combination of every team's weighted index (WI) and tournament index (TI).

The WI, based on the most recent ODI encounters between every pair of teams as shown in Table B, is essentially a weighted average that considers the 'opposition strength' (because wins against strong opponents must be rewarded more) and the 'home-away-neutral' factors (because teams usually win more at home, and lose more playing 'away').

The TI factors in a team's performance in tournaments and series (and thereby seeks to better reward wins in 'big' matches).
