How Indian coaches' salaries have risen!
John Wright

Salary: Rs 1 crore

Country: New Zealand

Tenure: 2000-2005

The New Zealander was paid around Rs 1 crore, a huge sum back then for a coaching job.

Under Wright, who formed a successful partnership with then captain Sourav Ganguly, India produced a historic 2-1 Test series victory against Steve Waugh's all-conquering Australian side.

India also made it to the 2003 World Cup final.

The Indians registered a Test series win in Pakistan and successfully drew a Test series in Australia to improve their record away from home.

Greg Chappell

Salary: Rs 1.25 crore

Country: Australia

Tenure: 2005-2006

Chappell, one of the finest batsmen of his time, came in with huge expectations, but his two-year tenure was very controversial.

He was paid nearly the same as Wright, but received several other benefits.

Wright was interestingly preferred to Chappell in 2000 because the BCCI then felt the Australian was too expensive.

As per reports, Chappell also received an annual travel allowance not exceeding Rs 860,000, a share in logo money, communication expenses when with the team, an apartment and 70 days annual leave.

Chappell failed to deliver results on the field. His controversial feud with Sourav Ganguly resulted in the left-hander losing his captaincy and his place in the team.

Sachin Tendulkar too was unhappy with Chappell's style.

The Aussie was shown the door after India's disastrous showing in the 2007 50-overs World Cup in the West Indies where Rahul Dravid's team was knocked out in the preliminary round.

Gary Kirsten

Salary: Rs 2.5 crore

Country: South Africa

Tenure: 2006-2011

Kirsten was appointed in 2008 on a two-year contract which was later extended till the 2011 World Cup.

Under Kirsten, India scaled the No 1 rankings in Test cricket and also triumphed at the 2011 World Cup.

Duncan Fletcher

Salary: Rs 4.2 crore

Country: Zimbabwe

Tenure: 2011-2015

Fletcher took over from Kirsten in 2011 on a two-year contract. which was later extended.

The team did well in the ODIs under the Zimbabwean, winning eight series in a row including the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

But India suffered a poor run in Tests, suffering back-to-back 0-4 whitewashes in England and Australia in 2011-2012.

India also lost a Test series at home against England, while losing away series in South Africa and New Zealand.

Fletcher was lucky to get a contract extension despite India's poor results with Sunil Gavaskar calling for him to be replaced.

His tenure ended after India's loss in the 2015 World Cup semi-final to Australia.

Anil Kumble

Salary: Rs 6.25 crore

Country: India

Tenure: 2016-2017

Despite having no coaching experience, the spin legend got the nod from the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising his former team mates Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and V V S Laxman.

Despite producing excellent results in Test cricket, including five series wins in a row against the West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia, Kumble failed to last beyond his one-year contract.

All because Captain Virat Kohli apparently didn't like his tough guy style.

Ravi Shastri

Salary: Rs 8 crore

Country: India

Tenure: 2017-2019

Shastri may have missed out on the job last year, but there was no stopping him this time around with Virat Kohli endorsing bhis candidature.

While Kumble was given a one-year contract, Shastri has secured a two-year contract, which runs till the 2019 ODI World Cup in England.

His remuneration is more substantial than Kumble's and his overall salary including benefits comes to nearly Rs 8 crore, which is much more than what top cricket coaches around the world earn.
