Yusuf's ton helps Baroda beat Mumbai

February 15, 2009 21:00 IST

An unbeaten century by all-rounder Yusuf Pathan [Images] 101 n.o. (72b, 5x4, 7x6) enabled Baroda beat Mumbai [Images] by four wickets in the opening match of the West Zone Ranji Trophy one day tournament played at the RMC ground in Rajkot.

Chasing a competitive target of 279, Baroda had a shaky start losing their first three wickets during the first powerplay with less than 40 runs on the board.

Rakesh Solanki and Pinal Shah added 53 runs for the fourth wicket to steady Baroda's sinking ship.

The departure of Shah brought Yusuf Pathan, who wasted no time in settling down. Pathan first added 92 runs for the sixth wicket with Ketan Panchal (37) and then shared an undefeated stand of 105 runs with brother Irfan Pathan [Images] 51 not out (42b, 5X4, 1X6).

Yusuf, who completed his fifty from just 38 balls, scored the winning runs in the 45th over and raised his century in the process.

For Mumbai, Dhaval Kulkarni and Wilkin Mota shared two wickets each giving away 38 and 49 runs respectively.

Earlier, Mumbai, who elected to bat, rode on skipper Wasim Jaffer's [Images] strokeful century 131 (118b 10x4, 4x6) to post a competitive score of 278 in 48.5 overs. Rohit Sharma [Images] (37) and Aditya Tere (33) made noteworthy contributions for Mumbai.
