Mitchell Johnson claimed his maiden five-wicket haul as Australia [Images] beat New Zealand [Images] by 149 runs in the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on Sunday morning.

The Kiwis resumed on the fourth morning on 143 for 6, 184 runs in arrears, chasing an unlikely 327 for victory. But once skipper Daniel Vettori [Images] was out for 10 to Johnson, the Aussies were sure of finishing the match quickly. Vettori was caught one-handed by Andrew Symonds [Images] at point.

In his next over the left-armer also induced an edge behind off Ross Taylor for 75 to end a 128-ball stay at the wicket.

Stuart Clark then had Iain O'Brien caught at point by Michael Clarke [Images] while Chris Martin lasted four balls, clean bowled by Johnson.

Tim Southee gave Kiwis something to cheer about earlier as he hit two sixes off Clark.

Johnson finished with five wickets for 39 runs to claim his maiden five-wicket haul. His impressive match figures of 9 for 69 earned him the man-of-the-match award as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

Clark had figures of 4 for 43 in the second innings -- he picked 2 for 46 in the first -- as Australia's decision to rest Jason Krejza and go in with a four-pronged pace attack paid off on an unpredictable Gabba track.
