Day II round-up

Mumbai register back-to-back victories 

Mumbai registered their second convincing victory in Ranji Trophy, defeating Gujarat by an innings and 239 runs with a full day to spare in their second round Group A Super League match at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat [Images] on Wednesday.

After following on, Mumbai bowlers humiliated the hosts batsmen, wrapping them up for just for 44 runs in their second essay to complete the victory on the penultimate day of the four-day match.

A Singh (13) was the lone Gujarat player to score double figures as Ajit Agarkar [Images], Dhaval Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar [Images] -- who took three wicket apiece -- sent the hosts packing.

In the first innings, skipper Wasim Jaffer [Images] (172) and A Rahane (104) helped Mumbai pile a 486 runs with Mohnish Parmar bagging six wickets for 143 runs for the hosts.

Earlier in the day, starting from their overnight score of 77 for six, Gujarat was bundled out for 203, thereby failing to save the follow on.

Yadav's bowling heroics give Hyderabad edge over Delhi [Images]

A superb six-wicket haul by Ashwin Yadav helped Hyderabad gain a useful 50-run lead over Delhi on the third day of their Ranji Trophy Super League match at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium.

Having taken two wickets on Tuesday, Yadav went on a prowl and broke the visitors back in the first innings, claiming four more wickets.

With Yadav scalping six wickets, Delhi were dismissed for a paltry 284 in reply to Hyderabad's first innings total of 334.

With his splendid bowling performance, Yadav eclipsed his previous best first class bowling figures of 4 for 75, achieved during the last Ranji season against Bengal in his home city.

Puneet Bist was the only Delhi batsman to put up a semblance of fight, scoring 78, before he too was sent to the pavilion by Yadav.

Resuming at the overnight score of 124 for three, the strong batting line-up of Delhi failed to find its rhythm as Yadav continued his exploits.

In their second innings, Hyderabad batsmen were comfortably placed at 31 for no loss 31, thereby stretching the lead to 81. Opener P Suman and D B Raviteja remaed unbeaten on 16 and 14 respectively.

Baroda concede first innings lead against UP

Baroda reached 239 for four in their second innings at the end of the third day's play after conceding the first innings lead to Uttar Pradesh [Images].

At stumps, R Solanki (60) and S Gaekwad (28) were at the crease.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 251 for eight, Uttar Pradesh added 35 valuable runs to take the first innings lead.

Pravin Kumar added 12 more runs to his overnight score of 38 before he was bowled by Irfan Pathan [Images] Jr.

Irfan Pathan was the pick of the Baroda bowlers, taking six wickets for 85 runs.

Maharashtra take lead against AP

Resuming at their overnight score of 205 for the loss of one wicket, Maharashtra were all out 393 in their Group B match against Andhra Pradesh and took a first innings lead at Anant Kanhere Grounds in Nashik.

Rohan Bhonsale was caught at point lobbing a short ball of DP Vijaykumar when he was at 77.

Later Ameya Shrikhande (59) and Kedar Jadhav (66) ensured the hosts the crucial lead.

Orissa restricted at 302 against Saurashtra

Riding on a fine peace of bowling by left arm seamer Sandip Jobanputra and off spinner Kamlesh Makwana, Saurashtra enforced follown on to visitors Orissa when the former restricted Orissa at 302 in the first innings on the the penultimate day at SCA Stadium in Rajkot.

Resuming at their overnight 46 for no loss, Orissa started losing wickets at regular intervals against Jobanputra and Makwana, the duo distributed 8 wickets between them. 

After failing to prevent the follow on, the visitors in their second essay were four for no loss in remaining one over. They are still 316 runs behind with a one full day's play left.

TN dismiss Karnataka for 267, enforce follow-on

Tamil Nadu bundled out Karnataka for 267, forcing the hosts to follow on, on the third day of their Group B encounter at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

In their second knock, Karnataka were 48 without loss at stumps. Tamil Nadu had made 531 in their innings to take a first innings lead of 264 runs.

Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 531 vs  Karnataka 267 (C Raghu 76, Ganesh Satish 44, V S Thilak Naidu 41; C Suresh 4 for 58, L Balaji 3 for 46, R Ashwin 3 for 63) and 48 without loss.

Punjab thrash Rajasthan by 9 wickets

Punjab thrashed Rajasthan by nine wickets to register an easy win at the PCA stadium.

Resuming at the overnight score of 57 for six, Rajasthan's top-order batsman Vineet Saxena staged a lone fight scoring 83 as the others failed to provide any resistance.

Punjab had scored 262 in their first innings as against Rajasthan's 133 and with the visitors tottering on 57 with six down, Saxena's innings helped delay the inevitable.

Sumit Mathur (31), the overnight partner of Saxena also chipped in with some useful runs. Spinner Charanjit Singh earned the prize wicket of Saxena, whose team was ultimately bundled out on 169 in the second innings.

With 41 required to win, it was cakewalk for the home team and they achieved the target with the loss of Sunny Sohal's (10) wicket. Ravinder Singh and Ravneet Ricky took Punjab to their target.
