Kumble retains eighth place in rankings

May 27, 2008 17:50 IST

Anil Kumble [Images] retained eighth place among the bowlers but Sachin Tendulkar [Images] dropped a rung to 14th in the batting chart, in the ICC [Images] Test rankings, issued on Tuesday.

Kumble has 708 points, one less than Sri Lanka's [Images] Chaminda Vaas [Images], in the bowling rankings, which is headed by another Sri Lankan, Muttiah Muralitharan (897).

Among batsmen, Tendulkar leads a pack of five Indians in the top-20.

The master batsman occupies 14th place with 704 points; he is followed by Rahul Dravid [Images] (15th), Virender Sehwag [Images] (17th), Sourav Ganguly [Images] (18th) and VVS Laxman (19th) -- who all dropped a rung.

Australia's Andrew Symonds and Englishman Andrew Strauss benefited from their match-winning knocks against the West Indies [Images] and New Zealand [Images] respectively and jumped eight and seven places in the batting chart.

Symonds moved up to 12 while Strauss, who scored a crucial 106 in the second innings of the second Test against New Zealand at Old Trafford, leapt to 16.

The batting rankings are still headed by two Australians -- Michael Hussey in first place and his captain, Ricky Ponting [Images], in second.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara is close behind in third, with Mohammad Yousuf [Images] of Pakistan in fourth and South Africa's Jacques Kallis [Images] in fifth.

Meanwhile, following a brilliant second-innings haul of 6 for 37, England's [Images] left-arm finger spinner Monty Panesar [Images] moved up five places to 11th among bowlers.
