New Zealand win last ball thriller

June 26, 2008 00:43 IST

New Zealand [Images] stole a dramatic win through an overthrow off the final ball in the fourth one-day international against England [Images] at The Oval on Wednesday.

Scorecard

With two runs needed off the final ball, number 11 Mark Gillespie took a single and the match was won when the return missed the stumps.

England had appeared to have the match won after a cruel piece of misfortune to New Zealand all-rounder Grant Elliott.

Elliott was run out for 24 after he collided heavily with bowler Ryan Sidebottom while seeking a quick single. England took the bails off at the bowler's end while Elliott lay helpless on the ground.

He walked slowly off the ground while his team mates looked on in shock from the dressing room and scattered booing broke out around the ground. The New Zealand players refused to shake hands with their England counterparts after the game.

New Zealand have an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the five-match series after a no-result in the second game. The final match is scheduled for Lord's on Saturday.

Scott Styris took advantage from three dropped catches to top-score with 69 in the New Zealand innings of 246 for nine.

Owais Shah was the highest scorer in England's 245 all out from 49.4 overs with 63, including two sixes.
