Relive India's summer of '83

June 20 2008

India started the 1983 World Cup with a bang, scoring a 34-run win over the West Indies -- the first defeat for the two-times champions in all World Cup matches till date.

India's performance was completely unexpected as the team had merely made up the numbers in the first two Cups. But connoisseurs nodded wisely and pointed to the fact that in March that year, India had produced its first ever one-day win over the West Indies, at the St Albion Grounds in Berbice, Guyana.

They then cruised past Zimbabwe, but were beaten by Australia by 162 runs.

Kapil Dev's brilliant counter-attacking innings of 175 against Zimbabwe helped India regain the momentum.

The semi-finals saw India score another upset when they knocked off hosts England by six wickets.

What followed in the final was unbelievable as India shocked the mighty West Indies after being bowled out for a mere 183.

For a country starved of cricketing success, the triumph was a dream come true.
