Matthew Hayden's [Images] chances of playing in the third Test in Perth are slim with the opener saying he was not sure whether he can recover in time for the match beginning January 16.

Hayden, who has been in excellent form in the series, has hurt his hamstring and is relying on acupuncture therapy to heal his injury.

"I've been basically resting this week and I don't know there's anything more I can do. I just have to let it heal. I am going to fly over to Perth and I have got until the weekend to have some more treatment. I am hopeful (of playing) but I am not too sure," Hayden was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun.

West Australian opener Chris Rogers, who scored a half-century against India in the practice game on Friday, could earn his first Test cap if Hayden sits out.

Australian physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said the player was responding well to the treatment.

"The acupuncture helps him relax and decreases muscle spasm around the injury. It is a treatment he has responded pretty well to in the past," he said.
