West Indies [Images] captain Chris Gayle was fined 70 percent of his match fee for a code of conduct breach during the second and final Test against Sri Lanka [Images] in Port-of-Spain, the International Cricket Council said on Monday.

Gayle was found to have violated the code relating to unfair play as his side had bowled their overs too slowly, an ICC [Images] statement said.

West Indies won the Test by six wickets on Sunday to level the two-match series 1-1.

The other members of the West Indies side were fined 35 percent of their match fees after the team was found to have been six overs short of the required over-rate, an offence to which Gayle pleaded not guilty.

The hearing was conducted by match referee Chris Broad at the conclusion of the game.

"Slow over-rates are not fair to the opposition or the paying spectators and captains have a responsibility to ensure their players adhere to the regulations in that regard," Broad said in the statement.
