Vadodara beat Bengal by an innings November 18, 2007 17:51 IST Hosts Vadodara crushed last year's runners-up Bengal by an innings and 59 runs, bundling the latter out for a paltry 86 in their second innings on the fourth and final day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'B' match at the Motibaug Palace ground in Vadodara on Sunday. Vadodara, who had taken the driver's seat, after a 145-run first innings lead, toiled for only a couple of hours on Sunday morning to shut out the under pressure opponents and score an innings victory. Following the resounding victory, in their opening Ranji Trophy match, Vadodara picked six points, including a bonus one. Bengal had earlier picked three points against Hyderabad from their opening match by virtue of the first innings lead. Vadodara all-rounder Yusuf Pathan, who helped the side take a 145-run first innings lead after a five-wicket haul and a scintillating knock of 183 from 150 balls, demolished Bengal's second innings again with his deadly off-spin as he returned with a match figures of 10 for 119 runs. While Pathan, bowling full steam, claimed five Bengal wickets in the second innings, including those of Anustup (0), Arindam Das (6), Manoj Tiwary (0) and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Shah (45), for 36 runs in his 19.4 over spell, leggie Rajesh Pawar snared four wickets, conceding 23 runs in 16 overs. The visitors, who trailed by 144 runs with nine wickets in hand on Saturday, having lost opener Anustup Majumdar with one run on the board, were in trouble as soon as they resumed on Sunday. Unable to withstand the double spin attack of Pathan and Pawar, Bengal crashed to 13 for five wickets by the 13th over. Barring wicketkeeper Shah, who top-scored with 45 from 118 balls, and Rana Chowdhary (23, 49b), none of the Bengal batsmen could reach double figures and the second innings folded for 86, 20 minutes after lunch.
