Tewari hits double ton to put Hyderabad in dire straits
November 05, 2007 23:05 IST
Hyderabad are in dire straits after losing five wickets for 65 runs in reply to Bengal's huge 461 in the first innings thanks to a fine 203 by Manoj Tewari and a sparkling 111 not out by debutant Wriddhiman Saha on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Elite 'B' group match in Kolkata on Monday.
Earlier Manoj and Wriddhiman resumed the Bengal innings at the overnight score of 289 for five. The play started 45 minutes after the scheduled time because of a wet outfield caused by a morning drizzle. Both collected runs briskly as they handled the Hyderbad spinners and medium pacers at ease.
Manoj completed his double ton for the second time in his carrier with 20 hits to the fence and two sixes off 278 balls. He finally made his exit when he missed the line of a faster delivery by P Ojha and was stumped by H Ahmed.
Wriddhiman, remained not out after making 111 playing 194 balls and hitting 15 fours and a six.
Wriddhiman also did a fine job behind the wicket taking a couple of catches and a stumping.
None of the top order Hyderabad batsmen withstood either of the Bengal bowlers.
Speedster Ranadev Bose and Shib Shankar Paul caused the early damage bagging first three wickets, including that of V V S Laxman [Images] who departed for a duck. Spinners Saurashish Lahiri and Murtaza Lodhgar took two other Hyderabad scalps today.
Trying to hit a short pitch delivery off S S Paul, Laxman missed the line. The ball hit his gloves and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman took a brilliant catch diving to his left.
When the curtain came down on the second day, Amol Shinde and Habeb Ahmed were batting with their backs to the wall and remained not out with 7 and 1 respectively.
