Defending champions Uttar Pradesh took control of their last Ranji Trophy Super League encounter on the first day by dismissing Andhra cheaply, in Kanpur, on Wednesday.

Medium Pacers Rudra Pratap Singh and Praveen Kumar took four wickets each as Andhra were skittled out for a mere 111 in the first innings at the Kamla Club ground.

In reply, the hosts were 155 for four, with Suresh Raina batting on 50 and Ravikant Shukla yet to open his account.

Andhra elected to bat on winning the toss but the move backfired as the Uttar Pradesh new ball bowlers made good use of the heavy atmosphere in the morning.

R P Singh (4-30) and Praveen Kumar (4-47) ripped through the batting line-up as Andhra were bowled out in 37.3 overs.

Medium pacers Ratnesh Mishra and Rohit Prakash bagged a wicket apiece.

Opener Manoj Sai was the highest scorer for Andhra with 22 while the biggest partnership of the innings (31 runs) was the one between MSK Prasad and S Arjun Kumar for the sixth wicket.

Though Uttar Pradesh lost opener Rohit Prakash cheaply, captain Mohammad Kaif and Suresh Raina settled the nerves with their steady batting.

Kaif contributed 26 before being caught behind off the bowling of Shahabuddin, though the batsman was not happy with the decision.

Raina and Ali Murtaza consolidated the position adding 82 for fourth wicket.

Raina, who is looking to return to the national side, completed his half-century in 98 ball hitting 10 boundaries. Murtaza contributed 36 runs.
