Openers Abhinav Mukund and M Vijay hammered hundreds and put on 256 runs for the first wicket as Tamil Nadu ended Day 1 in the Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra on 262 for 1, in Chennai, on Saturday.

After captain Subramaniam Badrinath elected to bat on a placid wicket, Mukund and Vijay scored at will. Their 256-run partnership came off 88.3 overs before Mukund was dismissed for 120.

Vijay (129) and Badrinath (4) were at the crease when stumps were drawn.

Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah tried his best to break the partnership, using eight bowlers. Vijay had a reprieve when he was on 89 with the hosts 177 without loss, when Sandip Maniar failed to hold on to a catch off his own bowling

Mukund, who made his debut in Ranji Trophy this season and struck a fine 108 against Karnataka on November 23, continued his good work. He fell in the penultimate over of the day, giving a straight forward catch to Kamlesh Makwana at gully.

Mukund faced 271 balls for his 120 which contained 13 fours and a six while Vijay's unbeaten 129 off 271 balls had 13 fours and four huge sixes.
