Vengsarkar set to take over as chief selector

September 22, 2006 12:59 IST

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar is set to take over as chief national selector from former teammate Kiran More.

Vengsarkar's name has been put forward as nominee from the influential west zone, one of India's five regions represented on the panel.

"The Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) management committee has proposed Vengsarkar as west zone's representative and we expect his name to be cleared by other state associations of this zone," MCA official Ratnakar Shetty said on Friday.

Vengsarkar's appointment appears to be a formality and his credentials as one of the finest batsman of his generation are likely to ensure that he heads the committee.

The new senior selection committee will be announced during the board's annual general meeting in Mumbai on September 27 and 28.

The 50-year-old Vengsarkar was the first batsman to score three hundreds against England at Lord's, and made 6,868 runs in 116 Tests between 1976 and 1992, including 17 centuries.

Former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju is expected to replace VB Chandrasekhar, who like More finishes his term, as the south zone's representative.

Raju, 37, played 28 Tests and 53 one-dayers between 1990 and 2001.
