Australia elect to bat against WI

September 12, 2006 13:09 IST

Australian captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat against the West Indies in the first cricket one-dayer of the DLF Cup tri-series at the Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Veteran pace bowler Glenn McGrath makes a return to the Australian team after taking time-off from cricket in January to care for his ill wife.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting expects experienced McGrath to produce the goods.

"I'm looking forward to Glenn playing again," Ponting told reporters on Monday.

"He's really keen to get involved and has been working very hard in the off-season to get himself right for this series, and sort of a build-up for the Champions Trophy.

"I've got the highest expectations of Glenn coming back. He's a been such a great bowler for such a long period of time, he'll just slot right back in and do the job for us."

Australia, who have not played international cricket for more than four months, have brought a squad of 18 to Malaysia, hoping to give all the players a chance to stake their claims for next year's World Cup.

Teams:

Australia: Ricky Ponting (captain), Simon Katich, Phil Jaques, Michael Clarke, Mark Cosgrove, Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Dan Cullen, Mitchell Johnson, Glenn McGrath, Nathan Bracken.

West Indies: Brian Lara (capt), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo, Wavell Hinds, Dwayne Smith, Carlton Baugh Jr, Ian Bradshaw, Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards.

Umpires: Tony Hill (NZL), Asad Rauf (PAK)

TV umpire: Mark Benson (ENG)

Match referee: Chris Broad (ENG).
