Rousing welcome for women's cricket team

September 03, 2006 21:48 IST

The Indian women's cricket returned to a rousing welcome on Sunday afternoon after winning the two-match Test series against England at Taunton.

The team, led by Mithali Raj, won the series 1-0 after a five-wicket victory over the hosts on Friday.

Speaking to newspersons, Mithali praised the squad for pulling themselves together after the 4-0 defeat in the one-day internationals.

She also praised Jhulan Goswami whose 10-wicket haul in the match was instrumental in shaping victory.

''Jhulan bowled extremely well and with the support of the team we were able to achieve a creditable victory,'' she said.

Jhulan, the wrecker-in-chief said, ''After the one-day loss we had a lot to prove and I am glad the whole team responded under Mithali and we were able to pick ourselves up and secure this great victory.''

This was the first tour undertaken by the women's team after the merger of the women's wing with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
