England's [Images] Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan [Images] made a duck on Wednesday in his first competitive match since knee surgery in June.

Vaughan was dismissed without scoring for England's Academy side in a low-key match against a Western Australia XI in Perth.

Vaughan had faced seven balls when he edged Darren Wates behind to wicketkeeper Christian Moir.

The 32-year-old was using Wednesday's warm-up as an early test for his hopes of being available for the fourth Ashes Test against Australia starting in Melbourne on December 26.

England already trail the five-match series 1-0 after losing the first test in Brisbane by 277 runs.
