Lara sweeps Windies cricket awards

Caribbean legend Brian Lara [Images] swept the West Indies [Images] cricket awards, winning three top honours, including the coveted Cricketer of the Year.

Lara was honoured with the awards, instituted by the West Indies Players' Association, at a function at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre in West Trinidad on Thursday night.

The 37-year-old batting genius, who holds the world records for the highest Test score of 400 and highest Test run aggregate (11,294), also bagged the WIPA Special and the Test Player Of The Year awards.

Young wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, currently not part of the national squad for the one-dayers against India, was named the Emerging Player Of The Year.

Middle-order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan [Images] was rewarded for his good show in the domestic circuit and was awarded the First-class Player Of The Year title.

Emerging pacer Ian Bradshaw was named the One-day Player Of The Year.

Top dignitaries, including the President of Trinidad and Tobago, George Maxwell Richards, and convenor of the West Indies Senior Selection panel Joey Carew attended the function.

West Indies Cricketer of the Year - Brian Lara

Test Player of the Year - Brian Lara

WIPA Special Award - Brian Lara

TGIF First Class Player of the Year - Ramnaresh Sarwan

WIPA Emerging Player of the Year - Denesh Ramdin

ODI Player of the Year - Ian Bradshaw.
