Fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick took five for 29 as Australia thrashed Indian eves by six wickets in the first one-day international at the St Peter's College in Adelaide on Saturday.

Put in to bat, India were all out for 89 in 42.3 overs while Australia chased the victory target in 39 overs.

India struggled from the start as Fitzpatrick's three-wicket opening burst left India reeling at 19 for four, a position from which they never really recovered.

India tried to comeback in the game with a 20-run partnership between Anjum Chopra and Rumeli Dhar for the fifth-wicket after which they lost their way again.

Anita Sharma was India's leading scorer with 24 while Dhar (15) and Chopra (12) were the only others to enter double digits.

Lisa Sthalekar joined in the fun, grabbing two wickets before Fitzpatrick came back to add two more to her tally.

In reply, Australia stuttered briefly after a double strike from Jhulan Goswami, who took three wickets for six runs after reducing the hosts to 16 for two.

Karen Rolton hit a captain's knock with a 72-ball 47, aided by eight hits to the fence as Australia romped home.
