Sri Lanka [Images] wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene has undergone appendix surgery in Wellington and is due to return home from the tour of New Zealand [Images] over the weekend, New Zealand Press Association reported on Thursday.

Jayawardene played both matches of the recent Test series, which was drawn 1-1, but was not part of the squad for two Twenty20 games and five one-day internationals over the next three weeks.

He was struck on the wrist by a ball from New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond [Images] during the second Test and was unable to keep wicket in the hosts' second innings.

All-rounder Malinga Bandara and Ruchira Perera are due to join up with the one-day squad after completing a Sri Lanka A tour of West Indies [Images] on Friday.
