Winning start for South African U-17 team

South Africa [Images] Alberton Cricket and Hockey Club Under-17 team began their 40-day tour of India with a 21-run victory over Chaman Vatika International school, in Ambala on Thursday.

Batting first after winning the toss, the South Africans scored 186 for 6 in the allotted 35 overs.

Morne Basson top-scored with 51 runs. Justin Gerber (37) and Chadd Hunzinger (33 not out) were their other main scorers. Sparsh Jain (3 for 13) was the most successful bowler for Chaman Vatika.

Sparsh Jain also scored brisk 50 off just 37 balls while Arjun Singh [Images] contributed 28.

But Chaman Vatika school fell short of the target by 21 runs as they were bowled out for 163.

Linton Deans was the wrecker-in-chief for the South Africans, picking four scalps for 42 runs. Robin Bouwer and Matthew Lee bagged two wickets each.

The visitors will play their second match against DAVCCCE Under-17 combined team on Friday at DAV College ground in Sector 10 Chandigarh.

Chaman Vatika International School U-17: 163 all out in 28 overs (Sparsh Jain 50, Arjun Singh 28, Linton Deans 4 for 42, Robin Bouwer 2 for 25, Matthew Lee 2 for 45, Nicolas Botha 1 for 24).
