Sri Lanka [Images] on Monday, assured India that it will provide foolproof security to the Indian cricket team in Colombo in the wake of a powerful mine blast close to the hotel where the players were staying.

This assurance was given on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government to India, according to Home Secretary V K Duggal, who spoke to Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran in this regard.

The Sri Lankan Government has promised to do their best to provide foolproof security to the Indian team, he said.

It is understood that the Indian cricketers would be provided with bullet proof cars and escorts to the places of their visit and stay and their travel plans would be worked out meticulously.

To a question on the fate of the tri-series matches in Colombo, Duggal said it was not for the Ministry of Home Affairs to decide and described the blast as "very unfortunate".

At least seven people were killed and eight others injured in the powerful mine blast close the hotel where Indian cricket team is staying in Colombo. The Indian cricketers were in their rooms in Hotel Taj Samudra when the explosion took place and they are all safe.
