Ganguly relinquishes Bengal captaincy

November 23, 2005 01:12 IST

Hours after being removed as skipper of the Indian Test side, Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday stepped down as captain of Bengal team for the Ranji Trophy match against Maharashtra beginning Wednesday.

"Sourav wants to give opportunity to younger members to groom themselves for the future. He told me that vice-captain Deep Dasgupta should lead the side in his place. Sourav will guide Deep," team manager Samir Dasgupta told PTI from Pune.

Dasgupta said Ganguly informed CAB Joint Secretary Saradindu Pal of his decision and got it Okayed.

"Ganguly feels that it was high time cricketers like Deep learnt the tricks of captaincy as Bengal's future lay in the hands of players like him," Dasgupta said.
