Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne [Images] has been named BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.

Warne, who had taken Test 645 wickets so far, will receive the award from Richie Benaud during Monday's programme to be shown on BBC One from 0130 hrs IST.

''I am very proud of this achievement and am delighted to receive this award,'' said the 36-year-old, who took 40 wickets in the Ashes defeat to England [Images].

Warne was up against a strong competition in the running for the award, with Formula One champion Fernando Alonso [Images], six-time Tour de France [Images] winner Lance Armstrong [Images] and Wimbledon champion Roger Federer [Images] among his rivals.
