Statistical highlights: India vs England, 2nd ODI

Rajneesh Gupta | September 04, 2004 17:34 IST

Virender Sehwag made his 100th one-day international appearance. He became the 21st Indian and 138th player overall to do so.

England posted a total of 300-plus for the third time against India. Their other 300-plus scores vs India are 334 for 4 (in 60 overs) and 325 for 5 (in 50 overs) both at Lord's on 07-06-1975 and 13-07-2002 respectively.

England's 307 for 5 is now their highest total against India at The Oval, surpassing the previous best of 291 for 8 on 23-05-1996.

The 174-run partnership between Andrew Flintoff and Paul Collingwood is the all-time record for England for the fifth wicket in ODIs, surpassing the 142 between Robin Smith and Graham Thorpe against Australia at Birmingham on 21-05-1993. Interestingly Smith-Thorpe partnership also started with the scoreboard reading 105 for four as was the case in this match.

The Flintoff-Collingwood partnership is the fourth highest for the fifth wicket in all ODIs and highest ever for the fifth wicket by any country against India. The 166 between Sanath Jayasuriya and Russel Arnold for Sri Lanka at Sharjah on 29-10-2000 was the previous best.

Incidentally, the previous highest fifth wicket stand for England against India was 110 between Mike Gatting and David Gower at Jullundur on 20-12-1981. The previous best fifth-wicket partnership for England at home soil against India was 94 (unbroken) between Graham Thorpe and Alec Stewart at Headingley on 25-05-1996.

Flintoff (99 off 93 balls) became the 21st batsman (on 22nd occasion) to miss coveted three-figure mark by one run. He is the fourth Englishman to make a score of 99. By an odd coincidence, all four batsmen have suffered this fate at The Oval – Geoff Boycott (vs Australia on 20-08-1980), Allan Lamb (vs India on 04-06-1982), Chris Broad (vs Pakistan on 21-05-1987) and now Andrew Flintoff.

Flintoff also registered his highest ODI score against India. His previous highest against India was 64 at Durban on 26-02-2003 in the World Cup. He has now made scores of 51, 40, 64, 34 not out and 99 in his last five innings against India.

Flintoff has now hit 69 sixes in 67 ODI innings at the rate of 1.02 six per innings. Among the batsmen with at least 50 sixes in an ODI career, Flintoff's frequency is the highest. Pakistan's Shahid Afridi (0.94) and West Indies' Ricardo Powell (0.81) come next.

English batsmen scored 166 runs in boundaries only (34 fours and 5 sixes) in the match. This is England's second best performance in an ODI. They had made 170 runs in boundaries in the match against New Zealand at Adelaide on 29-01-1983.

Harbhajan Singh (10-2-14-2) recorded the most economical bowling figures of his career in a ten-over spell. He had previously conceded 20 runs in 10 overs on two separate occasions – vs The Netherlands at Paarl on 12-02-2003 and vs Bangladesh at Colombo SSC on 21-07-2004.

Harbhajan's economy rate of 1.40 runs per over is now the best by an Indian against England in ten or more overs. Abid Ali had conceded 21 runs in eleven overs at The Oval on 15-07-1974 at an economy rate of 1.91 runs per over.

Harbhajan's economy rate of 1.40 is the best ever achieved by a bowler in a 10-over spell in the history of ODIs in an innings of 300 or more.

Laxmipathy Balaji's figures of 8-0-77-0 are the third most expensive for India against England. Only Karsan Ghavri and Chetan Sharma have conceded more runs than Balaji for India against England.

Ajit Agarkar, by conceding 60 runs in his six overs (runs per over 10.00), achieved the dubious distinction of recording the worst economy rate by an Indian against England bowling at least five overs. Interestingly, it was Agarkar himself, who held the previous record by giving away 47 runs in five overs (Rpo 9.40) at Mumbai Wankhede on 03-02-2002. However, the second place in worst economy rate list is now occupied by Balaji.

The 28 wides conceded by Indian bowlers are the second most  in an ODI after the 31 wides they sent down against Kenya at Bristol on 23-05-1999.

Sehwag recorded his ninth duck – his first against England.

Rahul Dravid has aggregated 36 runs at an average of 6.00 in his last six innings. His sequence being 5 vs Pakistan; 1 & 16 vs Sri Lanka; 0 vs Pakistan; 13 & 1 vs England.

The tenth wicket partnership of 64 runs between Harbhajan Singh and Laxmipathy Balaji is India's best in ODIs, surpassing the 62 between Ajay Jadeja and Javagal Srinath against South Africa at Sharjah on 22-03-2000. The previous best vs England was 38 between Anil Kumble and Ashish Nehra at The Oval on 09-07-2002.

The unbeaten 41 is Harbhajan Singh's second highest score in ODIs. His highest still remains 46 against Australia at Vishakhapatnam on 03-04-2001. Interestingly, that innings had also come at number 10. Harbhajan also became the first batsman to post two 40-plus scores at number 10 in ODIs.

Darren Gough (4-50) claimed a four-wicket haul for the eleventh time in his career. His figures in this match are his best against India, surpassing 3 for 46 at Cuttack on 22-01-2002.

Andrew Flintoff got his 10th Man of the Match award.
