Lehmann suffers muscle tear

October 26, 2004 17:06 IST

Australia's middle order batsman Darren Lehmann suffered a muscle tear on his right hamstring on the opening day of the third cricket Test against India at the VCA ground in Nagpur on Tuesday.

His condition is being monitored and his availability for the rest of the match will be known on Wednesday.

Lehmann suffered the injury while going for a second run during his fourth-wicket century stand with Damien Martyn.

He continued to bat with the help of a runner but was out just before tea for 70, scored off 83 balls. He and Martyn put on 148 runs to enable Australia recover from three quick blows before lunch.

"Lehmann was examined at tea by the team's physiotherapist, Errol Alcott. He has a tear on his right hamstring muscle," Australia's media manager Jonathan Rose informed.

"He's currently undergoing treatment and will be re-examined in 24 hours by which time we will be better placed to make a statement on his future availability in this match," he added.

The Australians' approach towards the media was in stark contrast to that of the Indians, who chose to try and keep skipper Sourav Ganguly's upper thigh strain under wraps till this morning.

Ganguly pulled out of the match only in the morning, leaving the job of captaining the side to his deputy Rahul Dravid.
