Nafis Khan in Bangladesh Test team

October 16, 2004 15:35 IST

Bangladesh included newcomer Nafis Iqbal Khan in a 14-member squad for the first cricket Test against New Zealand starting next week.

Habibul Bashar, out of action for the last one month due to a thumb injury, was retained as skipper in the hope that "he will recover fully" in time for the Test match beginning on October 19.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board was to announce a 13-member team but opted to add one more player as a backup for Bashar.

Bashar, 32, missed the ICC Champions Trophy and underwent a surgery in Australia last month.

"He can bat, but he cannot still have a full grip," said a BCB executive.

Nafis, a nephew of former national captain Akram Khan has played one-day internationals earlier but this is his first Test call.

Team: Habibul Bashar (captain), Rajin Saleh Alam (vice captain), Khaled Mashud (wicketkeeper), Javed Omar Belim, Mohammad Ashraful, Manjarul Islam Rala, Tapash Baisya, Mushfiqur Rahman Babu, Mohammed Rafique, Tareq Aziz Khan, Nafis Iqbal Khan, Hannan Sarkar, Alok Kapali and Alamgir Kabir.
