SA cricketers visit Mother House

November 27, 2004 17:59 IST

Taking time out of their hectic schedule, the South African cricket team today paid a visit to Mother House, the global headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata.

The entire South African squad, save injured skipper Graeme Smith, went to the Mother House around noon and prayed before Mother Teresa's tomb located within the premises.

"We looked around, spoke to the sisters. It was a great feeling. Mother Teresa is a revered figure in our country," South African team manager Goolam Raja said.

A spokesperson of the Charity said the team was received by Sister Christie, who showed the visitors around.

"It was always our dream to visit this place. Mother Teresa has done so much for the poor," Raja said.

"But it was only an informal visit. We did not want it to be a formal affair," he added.

The sisters presented medals and cards carrying Mother's pictures to the cricketers who were pleasantly surprised to know that there were four homes run by the Charity in South Africa.

Before leaving, the cricketers jokingly requested the sisters to pray for their victory in the Test match beginning in Kolkata on Sunday.

The narrow alley leading to the Mother House became choc-a-bloc with curious onlookers, including a large number of children, once news spread of the South Africans' arrival.

The cricketers then embarked on a short trip to the city's colonial landmark, the Victoria Memorial.
