No place for Karthik in ODI squad

November 06, 2004 15:45 IST

Irfan Pathan will make a comeback from injury when India take on Pakistan in an one-day international during the BCCI Platinum Jubilee celebration on November 13 at Kolkata. But the selectors surprisingly decided to leave Murali Karthik out of the squad.

Pathan was declared fit for the match after missing the last two Test matches against Australia due to a side strain.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly, who also missed the last two Test of the recently conluded series against Australia due to a thigh strain, will undergo a fitness test on November 10.

Left arm spinner Murali Kartik who impressed against Australia was dropped from the side. The selectors have decided to go with only two specialist spinners, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Also making a comeback is Tamil Nadu's Sridhran Sriram. The left-hander is a useful spinner as well. His performance on the 'A' tours to Zimbabwe and Kenya assured him a berth in the Indian team. Sriram has played six matches for India, making his debut against South Africa in Nagpur in 2000.

Earlier, BCCI nominated Clive Lloyd as ICC match referee for the match. Simon Taufel and K Hariharan would be the umpires for the one-dayer while I Sivaram and Rajan K Seth would be the reserve umpires.

The selectors also announced the Board President's XI team in Mumbai on Saturday, which will play a three-day tour game against the visiting South African team starting on November 14.

Mumbai skipper Sairaj Bahutule will lead the side in Jaipur.

Dheeraj Jadhav and Gautam Gambhir will open the innings for the Board President's XI, with Sadagoppan Ramesh as the third opener.

West Bengal bowler Shib Shankar Paul will also feature in the game that will decide the India squad that will play the Proteas in the two Test match series.

The team also features regulars Dinesh Mongia, Hemang Badani and Amit Bhandari, who replaced L Balaji during the Champions trophy in England.

Suresh Raina, star of India's under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh earlier this year, has also been inducted into the side.

India: Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Dinesh Kaarthick, Sridharan Sriram, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan.

Board President's XI: Gautam Gambhir, Dheeraj Jadhav, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Hemang Badani, Venugopal Rao, Dinesh Mongia, Sairaj Bahutule (capt), Ramesh Powar, Shib Shankar Paul, Amit Bhandari, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Avishkar Salvi, Joginder Sharma.
