No Indian police action on SA players

May 31, 2004 19:40 IST

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has assured its South Africa counterpart that none of its cricketers would face any police action during their forthcoming tour in connection with the match-fixing episode.

A communication to this effect was sent to the South African Board immediately after United Cricket Board of South Africa raised apprehension about the issue in a letter last year, a BCCI source said in Kolkata on Monday.

The source said the issue is settled and there is no confusion as of now.

The UCB had earlier written to the BCCI seeking assurance that no police action would be taken against any South African cricketer -- mainly Harschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje – in connection with the match-fixing expose by the Delhi Police in 2000.

The South African team is scheduled to make its first tour of India in November this year since its tour in 2000 when the late Hansie Cronje, the main accused in the case, was at the helm.

Gibbs and Boje's names had repeatedly come up during the course of investigations.

Investigations by the Delhi Police into the episode later led to Cronje's startling admission of guilt before the King Commission of enquiry in South Africa.

The South Africans, who will arrive in India before the Australians, are scheduled to play only a one-day series of seven matches. The Aussies will play four Test matches.
