Vaughan returns for second Test

May 30, 2004 15:33 IST

Captain Michael Vaughan was named on Sunday in the England squad for the second Test against New Zealand after missing the first match through injury.

Opener Andrew Strauss, who scored a century on debut in the seven-wicket victory at Lord's as a replacement for Vaughan, is also in the 13-man squad for the Test starting at Headingley on Thursday.

He replaces former captain Nasser Hussain, who retired last week after his unbeaten century at Lord's, in the squad originally named for the first Test in the three-match series.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said Vaughan would decide himself whether to drop down the order and retain the Lord's opening pair of Strauss and Marcus Trescothick.

"Michael is captain of England and I think it is his responsibility to decide what his batting lineup is," Graveney told the BBC.

England squad: Michael Vaughan (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Geraint Jones, Ashley Giles, Simon Jones, Matthew Hoggard, James Anderson, Steve Harmison.
