Sri Lanka drop Dharmasena

March 14, 2004 16:33 IST

Sri Lanka have dropped off spinner Kumar Dharmasena from their 15-man squad for the second Test against Australia starting on Tuesday.

Dharmasena took two wickets in the first innings in the first Test in Galle, which Australia won by 197 runs, but failed to make an impression in the second innings.

Orthodox left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been called up as his replacement. Herath, 26, played the last of his three Tests for Sri Lanka against Pakistan in June 2000.

Uncapped opener Saman Jayantha has been drafted in as a stand-by replacement for Sanath Jayasuriya and Thilan Samaraweera, who are both recovering from injury.

Jayasuriya spilt the webbing around his right thumb and Samaraweera pulled a groin muscle during the first test.

Squad: Hashan Tillakaratne (captain), Marvan Atapattu, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Avishka Gunawardene, Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa, Nuwan Kulasekara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Rangana Herath, Upul Chandana, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Saman Jayantha (stand-by).
