Vidarbha register second win

January 05, 2004 20:39 IST

Vidarbha defeated former Ranji champions Railways in a nail-biting encounter while Uttar Pradesh defeated Rajasthan in the Central Zone Ranji Trophy limited overs league matches at Jaipur on Monday.

Helped by a four wicket haul by Sandeep Singh, Vidarbha restricted Railways to a modest 164 and then recovered well from some early setbacks to win with five balls to spare.

Sandeep Singh (4/20) wrecked the fancied Railway batting lineup before middle order batsman Yere Gaud (45) and Shreyas Khanolkar (42) gave their total some respectability. Umesh Patil (2/29) gave good support to Sandeep Singh.

Vidarbha also received some early jolts during their chase but Amit Deshpande (42) and M Acharya (39 not out) ensured a memorable victory for their side.

In another encounter, Uttar Pradesh had no problem in overcoming the 212 run target set by the hosts, reaching the mark in 48.4 overs.

Brief scores:

Railways - 164 in 49 overs (Yere Goud 45, S Khanolkar 42, Sandeep Singh 4/20, Umesh Patil 2/29) lost to Vidarbha - 168 for 9 in 49.1 overs (Amit Deshpande 42, M Acharya 39 no, P Partadkar 21, J P Yadav 2/27, Madan Yadav 2/32)

Rajasthan - 211 for 8 in 50 overs (Gagan Khoda 49, Anup Dave 33 no, R Rawat 25, J Yadav 4/53, M Tripathi one/28) lost to Uttar Pradesh - 212 for 4 in 48.4 overs (R Prakash 62, P Singh 46, R Elahi 40 no).
