Papps is new face in NZ ODI team

February 08, 2004 19:58 IST

Canterbury batsman Michael Papps and Central Districts fast bowler Michael Mason have been named by New Zealand to play South Africa in the first one-day international in Auckland on Friday.

Papps, who has shone in the domestic one-day competition this season, will replace Craig Cumming, who himself was a replacement for the injured Nathan Astle in last month's series against Pakistan.

Mason, who played in the under-strength New Zealand side which lost 5-0 in the ODI series in Pakistan in November, was a strong reason why Central Districts won the State Shield one-day crown and has won a recall.

He replaces all rounder Andre Adams from the squad that beat Pakistan 4-1 last month and will be vying with Ian Butler and Kyle Mills for a berth in the playing 11.

Squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Michael Papps, Hamish Marshall, Scott Styris, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Chris Cairns, Kyle Mills, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey, Michael Mason, Ian Butler.
