Gujarat put up a fighting score

December 05, 2004 20:09 IST

After posting competitive 384 in the first innings, Gujarat got a grip over Railways by claiming two early wickets at the end of the second day's play in their four-day Elite group `A' Ranji match at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Resuming at overnight 201 for two, the hosts manged to add 183 runs to reach 384.

Niraj Patel, who had remained not out on 107 yesterday, managed to add only 14 more runs to his tally before being brilliantly caught and bowled by Railways captain Sanjay Bangar.

The in-form Patel cracked 19 boundaries in his 284 ball knock with ample support from Siddharth Trivedi, his partner at close of play on Saturday, who played a quickfire 51 (with 6 x 6) off 57 balls.

Disciplined bowling by the Railways, who managed wickets at regular intervals, except for some resistance by the experienced Mukund Parmar and Kirit Damani, brought about the early end of Gujarat's first innings.

Parmar went all out to score 29 off 52 balls with five hits to the boundary while Damani crafted his way to 43 with nine hits to the fence.

Parthiv Patel, who has much to prove with both the gloves and bat in the Ranji series to eye a place behind the stumps in the main squad, scored only two runs.

Last year's semi-finalists, Railways, however, were stung by the Gujarat seamers attack with Lalit Patel claiming both the early wickets including that of Bangar for a paltry eight with the score board reading just 16.

Railways were at 62 for 2 with T P Singh and Yere Goud not out on 29 and 19 respectively at the end of day's play.
