Sachin in a league of his own: Lara

September 19, 2003 23:48 IST

Refusing to be drawn into comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar, West Indies captain and ace batsman Brian Lara on Friday said the Indian star was in a league of his own.

"Sachin (Tendulkar) is a different player from me, he is in a league of his own," said Lara, who was Delhi on a promotional visit.

But constant comparisons by the media irked him. "Sachin is a genius no doubt, but I too have performed well when situation demanded."

"We both are best in the business, we are top two in the rankings," said the batsman who holds the double world record of Test and first-class cricket's highest individual score.

Lara, who led West Indies to a remarkable Test win against Australia chasing a fourth innings target in excess of 400 this year, said India should be positive in its approach when they take on the world champions later this season.

"Against Australia, we started negatively. But the player responded well after losing the first three Tests to complete a remarkable turnaround," he said.

West Indies staged a historic fight back against Australia in a five-Test series in Caribbean early this year when they, down 0-3, pulled off a stunning victory in the fifth and final Test.
