Sri Lanka leg spinner banned
September 13, 2003 16:45 IST
Sri Lanka's Kaushal Lokuarachchi has been banned for four months, with a two-year suspended sentence, after his involvement in a fatal car crash last month, a Sri Lanka cricket board official said on Saturday.
Leg spinner Lokuarachchi was arrested after the August 16 accident, in which a woman was killed after a car crashed through a Colombo bus stand into a roadside house.
The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka immediately launched an internal inquiry into the incident.
"The BCCSL has warned Lokuarachchi for misconduct and imposed a four-month ban from all cricket from the date of the incident, as well as a suspended two-year ban," BCCSL secretary Mohan de Silva told reporters.
Lokuarachchi has yet to be formally charged with causing a fatal accident because the case is tied up in court pending further evidence.
The suspension means the 21-year-old will not be available for selection until the end of December and will miss the home series against England.
Lokuarachchi has played three Tests and five one-day internationals for Sri Lanka, having made his debut in a one-dayer against Kenya in Sharjah in April.
England arrive in Sri Lanka in November for a six-week tour, which includes three one-day internationals and three Tests.
