The England wicket-keeper, playing his 133rd and last Test, was honoured during lunch on the first day of the fifth Test against South Africa at the Oval, his home ground.
Stewart, Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1993, is England's second highest run-getter in Test matches (8,425 runs in 132 Tests) behind Graham Gooch with 8,900 runs.
