Jadeja wants his bat to do the talking

October 28, 2003 20:48 IST

Ajay Jadeja is banking on his performance on the field to bail him out of the controversy over his inclusion in the Delhi team for the Ranji Trophy this season.

"I am competing with six other guys and if I don't perform I won't be there (in the team)," Jadeja said on Tuesday.

"There is no guarantee that I am going to be in the team forever," said Jadeja, who is fighting a court case against the Board of Control for Cricket in India against a ban from the game over his alleged nexus with bookmakers.

Early this year, an Arbitrator appointed by the Delhi High Court squashed the BCCI's five-year ban on Jadeja but the Board subsequently filed an appeal against the ruling. The Court in a further ruling allowed Jadeja to play in domestic matches provided he was selected for the same.

Jadeja's attempt in March to play in a Delhi and District Cricket Association league match after the Arbitrator's verdict was thwarted at the last minute as the umpires refused to accept his inclusion.

He, however, made an appearance in an unofficial day-night club tournament in May.

But his inclusion, not entirely unexpected, in the Delhi state team has caused a furore in the already faction ridden DDCA.

Members of the Association opposed to Jadeja's inclusion made a public protest on Monday when they also persuaded the Delhi under-15 players to wear an black armband during a match.

The protest was not against the cricketer but against the DDCA and its selection policy, a senior member of the Association said.

"We are not against Ajay Jadeja, the protest is against the DDCA policy matter," he said.

"He is not a current Test player, he was not among the 45 probables, nor in the 28 shortlisted names.

"He does not meet any of the criteria for selection, so how is he included in the team," he asked.

Chairman of Senior Selection Committee Chetan Chauhan said the DDCA had written to the Board of Jadeja's selection.

"We have written to the BCCI, it is a sort of permission seeking letter. If there is any objection from the Board, we will go about the matter accordingly.

"As far as we are concerned, he (Jadeja) has made himself available for selection, and so we have selected him."
