Aakash Christian fashions Gujarat win

Aakash Christian scored his maiden Ranji Trophy century as Gujarat defeated Assam by seven wickets in the Elite Group B match at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Resuming at their overnight score of 302 for three, hosts Assam took everybody by surprise when they declared after adding only 10 runs to their total after Vasant Saravanand completed his second Ranji century.

Saravanand remained not out on 100, which he scored off 163 balls and nine boundaries, while the other batsman at the crease R Satish made 35, which included three fours.

Set a target of 258 runs, the visitors began on an aggressive note with opener Aakash showing no mercy to the Assam bowlers. He went on to score his maiden Ranji Trophy century in 246 minutes off 192 balls.

Christian's knock of 104 included ten boundaries. While attempting another huge shot he was caught by Zakaria Zaffri off a Sukhwinder Singh delivery.

Assam's only successful bowler of the day, Sukhwinder Singh took the first wicket, claiming Luv Pawar, who was caught by substitute Mark Ingti at long-on.

Niraj Patel gave good company to Christian, scoring a solid 55 before being bowled by Sukhwinder with the score reading 182.

Mukund Parmar achieved the victory target by scoring a boundary off the last ball.
