Barrington scores big century

November 16, 2003 23:55 IST

Opener Roland Barrington hit a majestic 151 as Karnataka posted a healthy 411 in their first innings against Bengal on the second day of their Elite Group 'B' Ranji Trophy match in Mandya today.

At stumps on day two, Bengal were seven without loss with A Chakraborty and wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta, who has been recalled to the Indian Test squad to tour Australia, batting on three each.

Resuming at the overnight score of 126 for no loss, Karnataka suffered two early blows when opener J Arunkumar (63) departed after adding 146 runs for the first wicket with Barrington. S S Pal, who was the most successful bowler for the visitors with figures of six wickets for 90 runs, took a return catch to dismiss Arunkumar and followed it up with the scalp of Vijay Bhardwaj (2) soon after.

In between S Shinde was run out for nought as Bengal put some pressure on the hosts. But Barrington got good support from wicket-keeper Thilak Naidu (71). Later, left-arm spinner and former international Sunil Joshi (33 not out) also chipped in as Karnataka piled on the runs in 136.5 overs.

The opener's sparkling knock lasted 538 minutes and 371 deliveries and was studded with 12 boundaries.

S Sanyal was the other successful bowler for the visitors, taking two wickets for 31 runs.
