'Kumble not bowling right line'

June 13, 2003 15:30 IST

Former India off-spin great E A S Prasanna feels Anil Kumble is facing problems with his bowling mainly because he is erring in his line.

Anil KumblePrasanna, who is coaching potential off-spinners at a special camp at the MAC Spin Foundation in Chennai, said the strong points of Kumble's bowling were always his line and length.

"But, now, he is not bowling the right line. Maybe, with age a bowler loses some nip off the wicket," he said.

"Kumble could still be effective along with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh if he starts bowling the right line again," opined Prasanna.

The legendary off-spinner feels there is a lot of spinning talent in the country and blamed the authorities for neglecting the art of spin bowling.

"Talented spinners are the need of the hour in Indian cricket now," Prasanna observed, pointing out that the world has realised that even in one-day cricket spin is important, especially to take wickets after the first 15 overs in a match.

"Realising that just bowling blind pace is not the answer any longer to contain and dismiss the opposition, many sides are now including two or three spinners even in their one-day teams," he added.

Prasanna, however, said a good spinner is one who does something off the wicket, whether on a green top or a turning track.
