Lashkar threat to Ganguly

January 24, 2003 15:24 IST

Security has been tightened for India skipper Sourav Ganguly following a threat to him from terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-tayiba.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Industrial), South 24 Parganas district, Rajesh Singh said the number of commandos posted at Ganguly's residence has been increased in the wake of the threat.

Central intelligence agencies, who intercepted a LeT message, passed on the information to their West Bengal counterparts, police sources said.

"Commandos had been posted at his residence round the clock about a year back after a similar threat from some Kashmiri terrorist outfit. After the latest tip-off we have increased their presence," Singh said.

Other than the commandos, the number of policemen, including some in plainclothes, has been enhanced at Ganguly's residence at Behala, on the southern outskirts of city, the senior police official said.

Police also decided to raise the number of escort vehicles for Ganguly's convoy besides enhancing security at the places he would be visiting.
