Letter of the Day

January 3, 2003

Stop Adjectives

Whenever we win, we are all praises for our team, more precisely on individual players. We don't even differentiate whether its a regular feature or even a freak atttempt. Remember, Hrishikesh Kanitkar...he hit one boundary and made India win against Pakistan some years ago. Even his parents were interviewed for that contribution. Don't you think all this was too much?

'Kumble - the smiling assassin', 'Little Genius(read Tendulkar)', 'Prince of Calcutta', 'Dravid the Wall', 'Mysore Express', 'Haryana Hurricane', 'Little Masters', 'Very Very Special Laxman', etc etc..

Whats our 'Prince' doing in NZ? Or what about 'The Wall'? Or what about VVS? All these adjectives are just filling gaps in our newspapers. Why don't we just take each game as a game and not portray as a big achievement. World Cup may be one big event. Otherwise, we may play, say 100 one-dayers and we might win 50 of them... no big deal.

What names (rather how many adjectives) do you really think for Australians? 'Wah! Waugh', 'Warne Warns'... But, we don't hear much of these on Aussies.. all we hear about them is only wins and thats what matters..
