Karnataka out of Ranji trophy

Hosts Karnataka crashed out of the Ranji trophy finishing third in their Elite `B' group league, despite a seven wicket victory over Assam at Bangalore on Sunday.

Tied with 15 points along with Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad, Karnataka could not get into the semi finals, having lost to both the neighbouring teams in the league encounters.

After restricting Assam for 308 in their second innings, Karnataka lost just three wickets in 22.2 overs to score the winning target of 119 runs.

The hosts ended the league with 15 points from six encounters, in which it won three, lost two and drew one.

Assam earned six points from one win, one draw and four losses.

Resuming from the overnight tally of 52 for one, Assam piled up a moderate total of 308 which was powered by a century by R Satish (100) and half centuries by Parag K Das (56), Kiran R Powar (51) and S Vasanth Saravanan (50).

The Karnataka bowling was dominated by left arm spinner Sunil B Joshi (5 for 100) and Dodda Ganesh (4 for 69).

N C Aiyappa was incapacitated from bowling after he suffered a shoulder injury during his 13th over.

Karnataka, with a first innings lead of 190 runs, lost the wicket of captain J Arun Kumar to a run out at a score of 12 runs in the second innings, after a brilliant throw by Gautam D Dutta.

Barrington, who scored double century in the first innings, remained unbeaten with 42. Sudhindra, who joined Barrington after the fall of Vijay Bharadwaj, went in for a quick fire 30 with four hits to the fence.
