Mumbai take control of semi-final

April 26, 2003 20:45 IST

Mumbai piled up a 260-run first innings lead after posting a total of 390 in reply to Baroda's 130 on the second day of the Ranji trophy semi-final at the GSFC ground in Baroda on Saturday.

Baroda, in their second innings, were 16 for the loss of the prized wicket of captain Connor Williams when stumps were drawn for the day.

Mumbai resumed at its overnight score of 138 for three with Nitin Shetty and Bhavin Thakkar at the crease. Shetty got out early in the day, caught briliantly by Satyajit Parab off a Zaheer Khan delivery at a personal score of 74, which included 13 hits to the fence.

Thakkar, who kept his cool despite the scorching sun, kept making runs through singles and doubles and scored 76 before he was caught behind by Nayan Mongia off spinner Tushar Arothe.

Thakkar's 38-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Shetty, 30 with Paras Mhambrey, 79 with Sairaj Bahutule and 99 for seventh wicket with Ajit Agarkar, proved to be the backbone of Mumbai innings.

Agarkar's knock of 65 runs in 70 balls, including eight hits to the fence and a six, helped Mumbai reach the figure of 390. Bahutule made a valuable 45 runs.

Zaheer Khan was the most successful bowler for Baroda, claiming five wickets for 46 runs. Arothe claimed three wickets while Rakesh Patel and Ajit Bhoite took one each.
